ברומן שני עולמות המשתלבים בעלילה אחת. עולמה של סרינה המותירה אחריה שובל של דם כחלק מחיפושיה אחר אביה הביולוגי מצד אחד ועולמו של מקס השזור במעשי גבורתם של לוחמי המחתרת היהודית באלג'יר, שסייעו לכוחות האמריקניים לפלוש לאלג'יריה במלחמת העולם השנייה ולעלייתם של יהודי המגרב בשנות החמישים של המאה העשרים לישראל מן הצד האחר.
מקס וסרינה מתאחדים ונפרדים בנסיבות שלא תמיד תלויות בהם עד לסוף המפתיע.
The old man with the broom
A sweeping novel depicting an impossible romance taking place among the colorful streets of Marrakech. Romance blossoms between Max, an introverted Jewish man, and Serena, a beautiful Muslim woman from the Sahara. In the novel, their two very different worlds are woven into one plot. Serena's world, where her search for her biological father leaves a trail of blood behind her and Max's world and his involvment with the heroic deeds of the Jewish underground fighters in Algeria assisting the the American forces in World War II to invade Algeria and the story of the Maghreb Jews' immigration to Israel. Max and Serena find themselves with no control over the circumstances that both brings them together and tears them apart in the lead up to the surprising end.
