Without their family members they find themselves abandoned and lonely they cling to each other and become bonded by love, endless laughter and loyalty. The book follows two years in the lives of the five, from their painful entrance to the “"boy's home” each accompanied by an intense longing, through the special relationships that are slowly woven between the children alongside their adventures in the flowering fields of the Pardes Hanna settlement and the local farmland.

Their anguish is somewhat eased by the home’s devoted managers and caregivers whose wisdom and sensitivity help to fill the children’s emptiness.

It's hard not to get excited in the face of the children's constant anticipation of their parent’s visits; It’s hard not to shed a tear when their longings and loneliness rise to the surface; It's hard not to laugh at the five’s hilarious antics and it’s especially hard to put the book down before you discover the fate of the five after they reach the fourth grade and are forced to leave "the land of the lonely children”.

This is also the story of the young country in the 1950s. A newly founded country dealing with a bitter war with its enemies whilst absorbing hundreds of thousands of Jews from all corners of the globe. A country that took the time to provide a warm home for the children, some of whom had lost their father, some their mother and in some cases some that had lost them both.
